Gossip

Petra Groot Nibbelink

Gossip – we all recognize it. In our immediate circle, in our own team, and perhaps you are even guilty of it yourself.

πŸ”‘ Gossip in teams is often a sign of something bigger: unspoken frustrations, a lack of openness, or a culture where direct communication is difficult. The result? A negative atmosphere that undermines collaboration and results.

But tackling gossip isn’t simply saying: β€œStop that.” It requires:

1️⃣ Creating awareness: Why do people actually gossip? What impact does that have on trust and collaboration?

2️⃣ Strengthening communication skills: How do you give constructive feedback, even on uncomfortable topics?

3️⃣ Making team agreements: Choosing together how to communicate as a group with respect and openness.

πŸ’‘ During my sessions or in conversations with clients, this regularly surfaces as an issue within the team, and my most important lesson in this regard is:

Gossip is not malicious behavior, but often an unhealthy outlet. By investing in open communication, you can convert that energy into growth.

πŸ‘‰ Do you have experience with this as well, and what would your tip be for a team where there is a lot of gossip?
